Support Group Project

The aim of this study is to examine the impacts of support group participation on the lives of Latin American families who have a child with autism. We will examine the practical and mental health impacts of the support group itself and factors that influence attendance, in addition to exploring current mental health and practical support needs for families. Findings will help to inform the development of parent-mediated autism interventions designed specifically for Latin American families, specifically those designed to provide psychoeducation, mental health support, case management, and family navigation to families.

Project Design and Aims

This study examines the impacts of virtual support group participation on the lives of Latin American families from two states in the U.S., who have a child with autism. The project, conducted during 2023-2024, assesses both practical and mental health outcomes for families involved in the support group, as well as factors influencing their attendance. The findings aim to address the current mental health and practical support needs of these families, with the goal of developing parent-mediated autism interventions tailored to Latin American communities. These interventions will focus on psychoeducation, mental health support, case management, and family navigation. The support group based in Virginia is ongoing, and results from the study are forthcoming. This research was supported by the UVA Supporting Transformative Autism Research Initiative and the Autism Society of Central Virginia.
